I think isekai is not really that different from other fantasy in a sense of people with escapism tendencies liking them. In general, people who have lived in our world might be more relatable to readers and easier to write as main characters too.
the problem i see is that first directors of anime were basing their ideas on their life and they understood it, felt it.
then next generation of anime directors learned from the anime, not knowing the reasons why some decisions were made.
and then another one, who was learning from already recycled work
it's a bit like what da vinci said about learning to paint - don't learn from paintings of masters, learn the way masters did, from nature

in modern anime girls act like not girls, children act like not children. people are not people. and i have a feeling as if there was a book released a decade ago "7 archetypes you need to include in your anime!" and everyone is using the same templates
